Australians, Chinese, and Indians help Bali break another tourism record. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has released a new report on the number of foreign visitors to the island from January to July 2024. It was revealed that during this period, 3.538 million people visited the island, surpassing the 2019 figure, which was considered one of Bali’s most successful years. Back then, from January to July, 3.460 million people visited the island.
Returning to and surpassing this figure was no easy feat. During the Covid-19 pandemic and the years following, the island was closed to tourists, and travelers were reluctant to explore other countries and islands. Nevertheless, post-pandemic statistics show that tourism is recovering quite rapidly. For example, in the previous year, 2023, only 2.896 million foreign visitors came to Bali during the same period. The difference with 2024 is approximately 20%.
As for the distribution of countries from which foreign tourists come to Bali, it remains fairly predictable for this time of year. Most tourists on the island this year came from Australia. In July alone, out of 625,665 travelers, 155,143 were Australians, accounting for a quarter of all arrivals.
Second place went to tourists from China, with 47,800 visitors in July. India ranked third with 44,885 visits. Rounding out the top five were France and South Korea, with 32,352 and 31,592 visitors, respectively. Notably, there was a significant increase in French tourists this month compared to usual.
Bali Airport has already called July 2024 the month with the highest passenger traffic. Over these 31 days, it served 2.287 million passengers, exceeding the average monthly rate by 18%. "Of these, 1,342,187 were international passengers and 945,762 were domestic. We operated 6,381 international flights and 6,307 domestic flights,” said Handy Heriudhitiawan, Director General of Bali International Airport.
The number of foreign tourists is increasing not only in Bali but across Indonesia. From January to July 2024, 7.750 million people visited the country, a 20.75% increase compared to the previous year.
“The number of foreign tourists who visited the country by July 2024 is the highest since 2020,” said Puji Ismartini, a representative of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). In July alone, 1.310 million foreigners entered the country, a 9.42% increase from the previous month, June.
Interestingly, the distribution of nationalities visiting Indonesia overall differs slightly. In July, Malaysians took the lead with 177,710 visits, pushing Australians to second place (166,920 visits), while China ranked third (126,110 guests). There were also many visitors from Singapore (102,320 people).
Most visitors enter the country by air through Bali or Jakarta airports. As for the average length of stay, travelers spent an average of 8 to 10 nights in Indonesia in July 2024.
