A 41-year-old man in Bali was caught attempting to steal from an ATM in South Denpasar. Police arrested the Indonesian suspect while he was trying to break into a BNI bank ATM in Pedungan village. The incident itself might have been quite ordinary, if not for the method he used.
At around 5 AM, the police received a report from a bank employee who noticed suspicious activity near the ATM. Arriving swiftly at the scene, officers found the clumsy thief cutting into the ATM with a welding machine.
According to Commissioner Herson, the suspect had not yet reached the money. If the police had arrived a little later, the losses could have amounted to 577,600,000 rupiahs, as that was the total cash inside the ATM.

“The damage from this incident is estimated at around 3.5 million rupiahs—the cost of repairing the damaged ATM,” Herson added.
The man had thoroughly prepared for his “heist.” He used an 11-kilogram oxygen tank, a 3-kilogram LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) tank, a welding machine, and oxygen and gas regulators. He also had hoses, a wrench, a hammer, a screwdriver, and a lighter.
All these items were confiscated as evidence. The police also seized a silver cover from the ATM door and a black cover from the cash dispenser, both of which he had already cut through.
The suspect admitted to the crime, stating that he needed the money for daily expenses. He now faces charges of attempted theft under Article 363 of the Criminal Code, which carries a prison sentence of up to 5 years.
