In the grand finale of Top Model Indonesia 2024 in Bali, 70 models from various Indonesian provinces took part. The contestants went through a rigorous selection process at local levels, as the competition is considered prestigious, held annually since 1980, marking this as the 24th finale. The event was organized by the Indonesian Fashion Support Foundation (YPPMI).
In the months leading up to the grand finale, participants underwent intensive training in modeling and personal development. They learned fundamental skills such as posing, runway walking, speaking confidently and articulately, and managing facial expressions.
“We focus on building strong character, resilience, intelligence, and grace, so that the contestants appear confident and personable,” said Robby Maramis, chairman of YPPMI.
The competition includes several categories: children, teens, and adults. In each, contestants are evaluated not only on posing and walking but also on their unique qualities.
“Personality is our top priority in the evaluation. The contestants possess a range of basic skills, and we help develop them to be ready for a professional modeling career. To reach this level, they need true focus, which usually takes 4-5 months,” Robby explained.
In addition to its rich history, the competition is known for its cultural contributions. During the grand finale, the most beautiful women of Indonesia take the stage wearing traditional Balinese attire—not just the kebaya, but its modernized, designer versions. This also gives designers a chance to showcase their work on a big stage.
Robby Maramis noted that since the grand finale was first held in Bali in 2019, the showcase of kebaya modern (stylish traditional attire) has become an important part of the finalists’ presentations, spreading the beauty of Balinese culture across the archipelago.
Naturally, such a major fashion event also impacts the tourism sector. Designers and agents from around the world attend the shows in search of unique talents, making the Top Model Indonesia grand finale a forum where models can showcase their portfolios and even secure jobs on the spot.
For instance, agents will now be on the lookout for Dara Natasha Aulia Budiman, a sixth-grade student who took home three trophies and earned the title of Indonesia’s Top Model in her category. Standing 165 cm tall and weighing 49 kg, she represented West Java in the competition.
“Thank you to my father, mother, family, and all my friends who always support me,” Dara said, adding that the support of loved ones is the key to her success. She hopes that her victory, a result of hard work and dedication, will inspire other young Indonesians to pursue their dreams and realize their potential.
