Bali authorities have unveiled details of a new ring road project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the island’s busiest tourist areas.
Governor Wayan Koster announced a series of infrastructure projects designed to improve Bali’s transportation system. These initiatives include enhancements to public transport and major road network upgrades in high-traffic zones.
The new roads will connect Sunset Road and Mahendradata Highway in East Denpasar, as well as the long-anticipated West Gatot Subroto Road in Canggu. Additionally, Governor Koster has given the green light to the construction of new interchanges at Ahmad Yani Underpass and Tohpati Underpass-Akasia Intersection.
In 2025, Bali expects a record-breaking 6.5 million international tourists, significantly increasing the pressure on popular resorts and already congested roads.
One of the most problematic routes is the Jimbaran-Uluwatu road, which frequently experiences severe traffic jams. Badung Regent Wayan Adi Arnawa has stated that the construction of the Western Ring Road will reduce congestion at the entrance to the Bukit Peninsula from Jimbaran. According to him, land acquisition for the project has already begun.
Regent Arnawa also mentioned that authorities are considering an additional access route from Jalan Lingkar Barat to the Puri Gading Jimbaran residential complex, which could help distribute traffic more effectively.
Every year, millions of international and domestic tourists visit Badung Regency, in addition to local residents who live and work in the area. Regent Arnawa believes that traffic congestion and waste management are the two biggest challenges for the region, and he plans to focus on these issues in his new role.
As of now, there is no confirmed timeline for completing the Jimbaran-Uluwatu Ring Road. However, once construction begins, traffic congestion in these areas is expected to worsen in the short term.
Bali is actively seeking new ways to manage tourist traffic, utilizing all available resources. By December 2025, a new sea taxi service is set to launch on the island.
In the long term, Bali is also exploring metro systems, air taxis, and a northern airport, but these projects will take significant time to implement.
