On Java, Bali's neighbouring island, there are places that look like sets from a fantasy film.

The trees here grow to incredible sizes, their branches intertwine high overhead, and their trunks are covered in thick green moss.
Inside the crater of an active volcano lies a turquoise lake, with clouds of sulphur gas rising above it. And at night, among the volcanic rocks, you can see a rare natural phenomenon: blue fire.
Over a two-day trip, you'll visit one of the most unusual forests in Indonesia, climb Mount Ijen, watch the sunrise over its crater and relax by mountain waterfalls.
Your introduction to Java begins in the Djawatan Benculuk forest (De Djawatan). Giant trembesi trees grow here, with spreading canopies, massive roots and long branches draped with ferns and moss.
Sunlight breaks through the dense foliage, casting intricate patterns on the ground. You can stroll along the winding paths, take a close look at the unusual trees and photograph scenery reminiscent of the enchanted forests in "The Lord of the Rings".

But the main adventure is still ahead: a night climb up Mount Ijen. The ascent starts while it's still dark, when the only light on the mountain slopes comes from the travellers' torches. Ijen is famous for its blue fire, which appears when sulphurous gases ignite. You can see it if conditions are right and access to that part of the crater is open.
With the first rays of sunlight, the volcano is transformed. The rocky walls of the crater gradually emerge from the darkness, and below you a lake of deep turquoise comes into view, one of the most acidic volcanic lakes in the world. Plumes of sulphur gas rise above the water, and the landscape feels almost otherworldly.

After the climb, you'll discover a completely different side of Java: tropical greenery, cool mountain rivers and waterfalls. This is a place to recover after your night-time adventure, wander through lush vegetation and cool off by the cascading water.
