Dolphin Found Dead on Jembrana Shore

On Melaya Beach in Jembrana Regency, locals found a dead dolphin. It was a bottlenose dolphin, a species often named for its short, rounded “beak”.
The animal was first spotted by a local resident, Aulia, who was walking along the beach in the morning. The two-metre dolphin was already dead when it washed ashore.

The dolphin’s body was buried not far from where it was found. Police said this was done to prevent bad smells and keep the shoreline clean. The cause of death is still unknown.
Bottlenose dolphins live in warm and temperate seas, including waters around Indonesia, and are classed as protected marine mammals. They are one of the most recognisable dolphin species and are the ones most often shown in films, dolphinariums and tourist dolphin-watching programmes.
Such finds are not uncommon in Jembrana: in March, a dead dolphin was also found on Perancak Beach, but its body was in poor condition and specialists were unable to carry out an autopsy.
