A permanent 570-metre staircase will be built down to Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida, running from the clifftop all the way to the shore.

It will replace the steep path down the slope. Work will begin this year and is expected to take about six months. Construction will be funded by an Indonesian company in the Trip.соm group, which has allocated about IDR 3.2 billion (roughly 180 thousand US dollars) from its corporate social responsibility programme.
The same company has already built a new post at Kelingking where the entrance fee is collected, put up shelters for tourists here and at other sights on the island, and donated equipment to beach lifeguards.

Nusa Penida welcomes around 1.3 million tourists a year, with up to 3,000 visitors a day even during the low season. Local authorities are now encouraging travellers to spend more time on the island rather than visit for just a few hours.
An overnight stay allows visitors to explore Kelingking and nearby beaches at a more relaxed pace, with time for snorkelling the following morning. Two-day itineraries, including those offered by MyBaliTrips, make this possible.
Meanwhile, the dispute over the glass lift at the same cliff continues. Construction was halted last year; in September the Denpasar Administrative Court ruled in favour of the investor, and the Bali authorities filed an appeal.
