A local cafe where you can try traditional Indonesian Surabi pancakes.
Home of Surabi is the capital of the Western part of Java island, Bandung, where pancakes are very popular, in Bali they are rare. A small local coffee shop is one of the few places where you can try the traditional Javanese dessert. Pancakes are made from rice flour using coconut milk. They are usually eaten with sweet toppings, the most popular being brown or coconut sugar syrup. Cooked in a special oven, baked in lovely clay pots, it usually takes 10 minutes. The process is open, you can sneak a peek at how they are cooked. Besides surabi, fried bread with different toppings (like toast), fried bananas, and roasted corn.
There are two halls in the cafe - an open terrace on the street, it is quite hot here, especially near the stove, and a closed hall with air conditioning, where it is more comfortable and no one smokes. The place itself is quite simple, not perfectly clean, may scare someone off. If you want to try surabi, but the place does not cause a pleasant impression, take the pancakes for takeaway, and go to the beach, the sunset to meet! They open just in time for sunset at 5 o'clock.
Here is a self-service system, you don't need to wait for a waiter, take the menu, choose, write your order on the form, give it to the staff, pay also at the counter. The staff is not shibko English-speaking, but simple and kind guys (for some reason only boys work here), that can prompt. Prices are low, there is no tax.
What to try?
1. You choose Soerabi (Soerabi polos), and different fillings and sauces to it, you can choose several fillings. The most popular ones are:
Nangka - jackfruit
Pisang - banana
Almond
Nutella - indo pancake with Italian nut and chocolate paste! Perfecto!
Es krim - with ice cream, choice of vanilla or chocolate.
Kacang - peanuts
Kinca - brown sugar syrup.
Kismis - raisins
Keju.
Strawberry.
I do without sauce, they are not natural, and usually they pour condensed milk over the surabi, that's enough for me, but if you want sauce - chocolate or durian.
You can have unsweetened - with cheese/keju, with chicken/ayam, with egg/telur, there are also with sausage or meatballs baxo, I do not recommend, not a natural product.
2. Delicious and cheap fruit juices, favorites are Sirsak, Guava/jambu, or Mango. If you don't want sweet, ask for no added sugar, otherwise they don't spare the sweet syrup).
