A new traffic scheme has been in effect at the three-way Sayan–Sindu junction in Gianyar Regency since 14 August. The Gianyar Transportation Department closed two of the three possible turns to ease congestion at the junction and reduce the number of accidents.
Nothing has changed for traffic coming from the road to Kedewatan: drivers can continue straight towards Demayu–Sayan or turn left towards Tebongkang. However, drivers can no longer turn right from Demayu–Sayan towards Tebongkang, or left from Tebongkang towards Demayu–Sayan. Traffic from these two roads may now only continue straight ahead.
Direct travel between Demayu–Sayan and Tebongkang through this junction is now blocked in both directions. The Transportation Department has not published a detour route or designated a place to make a U-turn. Road signs and new markings are already in place at the junction.
No end date for the scheme has been announced. There are no separate rules for motorcycles—the restrictions apply to all traffic. The scheme was coordinated with the police, and drivers were notified for several days before it took effect.
Traffic schemes are being revised elsewhere on the island this year, not only in Sayan: seven U-turns on the road to the airport were closed in late July.
Ubud has been gridlocked since the beginning of August. Traffic backs up from morning to evening in Peliatan, Pengosekan, Singakerta and the town centre, while alternative roads normally used to avoid congestion are just as clogged. There are several reasons: the high season, roadworks that have closed or narrowed some lanes, and ngaben ceremonies, for which traffic is periodically diverted. Additional traffic control teams have been stationed at junctions in Ubud since the beginning of the month.
Repairs to roads in Ubud itself had been promised for the summer—the work on pavements and road surfaces began with the section from Puri Ubud to Campuhan.
