The volcano astounds with its surreal landscapes! Travelers from around the globe visit Java just for this experience, and you can witness this marvel tomorrow!
ACTIVITY ITINERARY
We can collect you from your hotel reception or villa entrance. We will then head to Gilimanuk Port. The journey takes approximately three to four hours. There will be a mandatory stop at a café, where you can relax and have a snack if you wish.
After an hour-long ferry ride, you will cross the strait that connects Bali and Java. We will arrive in a small city called Banyuwangi, where Ijen is located. The drive from the port to the parking area at the base of the volcano takes about another hour.
You will meet a professional guide waiting at the parking area, listen to the instructions, and receive masks and flashlights. Around two o'clock in the morning, the ascent begins. The hike takes about one and a half to two hours. To view the blue flames, we will descend directly into the volcano's crater. The descent into the crater takes roughly thirty minutes.
We will have ample time to admire the blue flames, take photos, and, if you wish, converse with sulfur carriers, then return to the peak of Ijen. If the sky is clear, you can see Bali :), enjoy a stunning sunrise from a height of 2,799 meters, and capture photos of the world's largest acidic lake. After sunrise, we will start our return journey.
You should return to the parking area by around 7:30 am. On the way back, there will be a stop at a local restaurant for breakfast, followed by a journey back to Bali. Arrival in Bali is expected between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm. You will reach your hotel around 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm, depending on traffic conditions.
Please bring:

  • Jacket (mid-season or light down jacket; if you don't have one, rental is available at the volcano for 50,000 rupiahs);
  • Hat or warm hood;
  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes;
  • Small backpack;
  • Masks and flashlights provided.
Children under 12 years old are not permitted to ascend.

Yesterday I went to Ijen - thermal underwear + sweatshirt + windbreaker were fine.
You can rent jackets, flashlights, and masks on-site.

You definitely need to cover your head and neck from the wind (scarf, hat, hood).

The organization and guides were excellent. Regarding the tour itself, on one hand, WOW!!! As you walk towards the crater and start to feel exhausted, that's just the beginning. I would still recommend assessing your strength and staying at the top to wait for the beautiful sunrise and the stunning view of the lake. The descent was manageable, with the guide assisting in difficult areas. You are in awe of what you see. The conditions in which people work are astonishing. The blue lava, the acidic lake. The journey back from the crater was challenging, but not physically. Breathing is difficult; the respirator doesn’t help. It was amazing to see the guides simply covering their noses with a cloth. I was tempted several times to remove the mask, but breathing was just impossible. I think if the respirators were better, the ascent would be easier. However, at the top, everyone was coughing regardless of wearing masks. Overall, I would recommend it, but only with a realistic assessment of your capabilities.
