During Bali’s rainy season, accidents involving falling trees are not uncommon. Strong winds and heavy rains constantly test the trees’ strength, and sometimes they fail.
Today, December 10, such an incident occurred in the famous Monkey Forest in Ubud. Disturbing footage of the event has surfaced online. A massive tree, with a diameter of two meters, crashed onto a tourist trail. The sound of branches snapping and leaves rustling was so loud that some of the tourists beneath the tree managed to escape in time. However, not everyone was so fortunate.
Two foreign tourists lost their lives: Justine Christine, 32, from France, and Kim Hyun, 42, from South Korea. Another individual is in critical condition, while five others sustained minor injuries. The injured were evacuated by a Gianyar Indonesian Red Cross ambulance, and the deceased are currently at Kenak Medika Ubud Hospital, awaiting coordination with immigration services and the victims’ families.
Travelers and residents are being urged to remain vigilant due to the risks of falling trees and landslides during heavy rains. Other incidents were also reported on the same day. For instance, an electric pole fell onto a house, and another tree fell onto a motorcycle. Fortunately, these incidents resulted in no casualties or injuries.
