Sunrise Balloons Over Ubud: An Unforgettable Ride

You can love Ubud endlessly — for its misty mornings, its rice fields, and the way the jungle comes right up to the villas. And there’s another way to admire this landscape: from a real hot-air balloon in Tanah Gajah.
The flight is short, about 10 minutes, but incredibly cinematic. The balloon rises to around 50 meters and stays tethered to the ground the whole time: it goes up and down strictly vertically, so you won’t drift off toward Kintamani or end up searching for the basket somewhere in the rice terraces. It’s more of an “aerial viewing platform” than a journey — and what a platform it is! In clear weather, you’ll see Ubud’s lush green valley, the rice fields, and — if you’re lucky — the silhouette of Mount Agung on the horizon. At sunrise everything is wrapped in golden mist, and at sunset the light turns soft and orange.
It’s easy to book this experience through mybalitrips.com — the process is well organized: you select a time slot, receive confirmation, and get clear instructions on what to do if the weather changes. The operator handles everything; you just arrive at your scheduled time. The basket can take two adults plus children. Safety is well managed: insurance is included, the team follows strict standards, and the balloon is launched only in good wind and visibility conditions.
The balloon operates twice a day:
  • at sunrise — around 06:30, when Ubud is just waking up;
  • at sunset — around 17:30, when thin smoke drifts above the fields and the light becomes incredibly beautiful.
Times may shift due to wind or rain — that’s completely normal for ballooning.
Tanah Gajah is about an hour and a half from Ngurah Rai International Airport. One of the benefits of the location is that you don’t need to leave right away: the resort is lush, peaceful, and has that quiet Ubud atmosphere people come to Bali for.
For proposals, the sunset flight is the best choice: you rise above Ubud during golden hour and enjoy a romantic dinner afterwards. The package includes a bouquet and a photographer who will capture the moment and send one complimentary digital photo (additional photos can be purchased).
What to keep in mind before the flight:
  • Book in advance — sunrise slots sell out quickly.
  • Arrive a little early for a short safety briefing.
  • Check the weather: flights operate only in light wind.
  • Wear comfortable shoes — you’ll be standing the whole time.
  • Make sure your phone or camera is fully charged; the organizers also take one free digital photo.
  • Drones are not allowed.
This isn’t an extreme activity — it’s a calm, very Balinese experience focused on the views. A great option for showing Ubud to children or guests who have already seen the waterfalls.
