Experiencing the cultural life of Bali is only truly complete if you've witnessed the unique dances of the Balinese people. Balinese dances are a distinct spiritual practice that were originally performed solely during ceremonies. The narratives of most dances are rooted in Hindu mythology and epics (such as the Ramayana) and depict a dramatic performance. Every movement and pose is deeply symbolic, with particular attention given to expressive eye movements.

The most renowned dances include kecak, puspandjali, pendet, and others. You can not only enjoy vibrant traditional performances but also learn some movements yourself or teach your children. Classes typically occur 1-2 times a week, and private lessons are available for both men and women.
Some studios (Ind. Sanggar) also offer lessons in playing gamelan. Most teachers do not speak English, but in my view, this doesn't hinder the dance-learning process and is also a fantastic opportunity to learn Indonesian. The key is your eagerness to understand the teacher and learn this ancient art.
