Indonesian authorities have announced that Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service will be launched in the next two weeks. This was stated by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investments, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan. According to him, the launch of Starlink will be beneficial for Indonesia because there are many "blind spots" in the country that need access to the internet.
He added that the agreements and licenses required for the operation of the satellite internet service in Indonesia have already been signed. "I spoke with Elon, the owner of Starlink, three days ago. We have planned something, but we haven't officially announced it yet. We will announce the details in Bali as soon as possible," Luhut added.
The Minister of Communication and Informatics, Budi Ari Setiadi, stated that Starlink will not harm the ecosystem of local internet providers operating in Indonesia. According to Budi, thanks to satellite technology, internet access will be available in areas where networks were previously unavailable for various reasons.
The current licensing status of Starlink already allows it to operate as a telecommunication provider in Indonesia. Starlink plans to test its network in the capital in mid-May, and satellite internet will be fully operational nationwide by the end of 2024.
Starlink's technology itself allows for bandwidth of up to one hundred megabits with a ping of 20-60 milliseconds. To use it, you need to install a rectangular antenna in a location with maximum sky visibility and connect the cable to the power supply and router, then install the app on your phone. The system will then configure itself, the main thing is not to forget to pay your tariff. As for the cost of the package in Indonesia, it will be 750k per month. However, first you will need to purchase equipment, which will cost 7,800,000 rupiah in Indonesia.
Another feature of Starlink is that the system can be installed on moving objects, such as boats or buses. For this configuration, you will have to pay more: 990 per month for regional travel and 7 million if you plan to use Starlink internet worldwide. For marine vessels, the subscription fee starts from 4 million for 50 GB per month, and the equipment will cost 43,700,000 rupiah.
