According to legends, Reog Ponorogo traces back to ancient Javanese traditions and myths. Multiple versions of its origin exist, but the most well-known story revolves around Prince Kelana Sewandana of the Bantaran Kingdom.
The legend tells of a brave prince who embarked on a journey in search of wisdom and spiritual enlightenment. During his quest, he encountered Dewi Songgolangit, a mystical goddess possessing extraordinary magical abilities.
The prince fell in love with Dewi Songgolangit and wished to marry her, but she set a unique condition: he had to create an extraordinary performance featuring a two-headed creature. Rising to the challenge, the prince successfully created a spectacular dance performance, which later became the foundation for the Reog Ponorogo dance tradition.
