Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is active again on the island of Flores, in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province. The volcano is currently at Level III status, meaning heightened alert. This is a serious monitoring level, but not the highest danger level.

The main recommendation from the authorities remains local: do not go within five kilometres of the crater. Over the past week, Lewotobi has erupted dozens of times, and since the start of the year it has erupted more than 200 times. For Indonesia, with its active volcanoes, this is normal.
The main restrictions apply to areas near the volcano and to some flights on Flores. This week, Frans Seda Airport in Maumere was temporarily closed due to ash, and several flights between Maumere, Kupang and Makassar were cancelled. Local residents were also warned about the risk of mudflows during heavy rain in rivers that originate near the volcano.
Labuan Bajo is not in the volcanic danger zone. If the wind carries ash towards western Flores, airlines may temporarily cancel individual flights.
Lewotobi is hundreds of kilometres from Bali. There have been no reports of Ngurah Rai Airport closing due to the volcano’s activity.
