Extra Health Checks Introduced at Bali Airport

Health screening for passengers has been tightened at Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali. This continues the measures previously introduced at Soekarno–Hatta Airport in Jakarta after reports of hantavirus in cruise ship passengers.

The Denpasar Health Quarantine Centre has installed two thermal scanners in the international arrivals terminal and one in the domestic arrivals area. Monitoring is carried out by quarantine officers. If a passenger is found to have a fever or other symptoms, they will be referred for additional screening.
At the same time, the airport has stepped up cleaning and waste control. Hantaviruses are usually transmitted to humans through contact with secretions from infected rodents — urine, saliva, or droppings. For this reason, the authorities have specifically stressed that there should be no build-ups of rubbish in the terminals that could attract rats.
So far, no cases of hantavirus have been recorded in Bali, according to the provincial health service. The agency asks residents to stay calm, keep things clean, and avoid contact with rodents and their secretions.
Hantavirus is a typical airborne droplet infection. Most often, people are infected not by other people but by rodents or an environment contaminated by them.
Symptoms can appear one to eight weeks after contact: fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and later cough and shortness of breath. In severe cases, the infection can affect the lungs and kidneys, so if symptoms occur after contact with rodents, it is best to see a doctor.
