Indonesia Should Appreciate Bali, Says Koster

Bali Governor Wayan Koster stated that the island contributes a significant portion of Indonesia's tourism revenue and deserves more attention from the capital.

At a regional congress of the Bali branch of the Hanura party, he emphasized that abroad, Bali is more recognizable than Indonesia itself.
"Abroad, people know Bali better than Indonesia. This is a great blessing, and Indonesia should be grateful to Bali," he said.
According to Koster, gratitude should be expressed not just in words, but through real support—primarily in the development of infrastructure and other areas important for Bali's future as a pillar of national tourism. He added that central agencies still do not regard Bali as a special region, although, according to his data, the island contributes 44% of the country's total tourism foreign exchange earnings.
"This is an exceptional contribution by one provincial region to Indonesia's economy. In reality, Bali has done a lot for the country," he concluded. Earlier, the head of the island expressed frustration that the central government returns a disproportionately small share of the funds that Bali contributes to the state treasury.
