A trial has begun in Bali for 27-year-old American citizen William Wallace Molyneux V, who is accused of illegal drug importation.

He was arrested on May 23 at a postal office near Kuta Beach, right after receiving a package from London. Inside, there were 99 Adderall tablets (a medication for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder — ADHD — and narcolepsy) containing a total of 1.86 grams of amphetamine.
Molyneux, a Florida resident, stated that he suffers from ADHD and needs the medication. According to him, while on vacation in Bali, he bought Adderall on the darknet and paid about $250 with the cryptocurrency Monero.
Amphetamine is banned in Indonesia, even with a prescription. "Medications for treating ADHD, such as Adderall, contain amphetamines and are therefore illegal in Indonesia. There are no exceptions," emphasized prosecutor I Made Dipa Umbara at the Denpasar district court hearing.
In early July, the accused was transferred from a detention center to a rehabilitation facility after his American doctor provided written confirmation of his diagnosis and treatment needs. However, the charges remain. In Indonesia, illegal drug importation carries a penalty of up to 15 years imprisonment and a fine of up to 10 billion rupiahs. The next hearing is scheduled for August 12, where witnesses will testify.
Indonesia's drug laws remain some of the strictest in the world: drug trafficking is still punishable by death by firing squad. According to the latest data, about 530 people are awaiting execution, including 96 foreigners. However, an unofficial moratorium has been in effect since 2016: executions are not carried out, although it has not been formally announced.
