The Lombok authorities have tightened the rules for ascending Rinjani: now every traveler must spend at least one night in Sembalun village – the main gateway to the mountain trails. This decision was made after a series of unfortunate incidents, including the recent death of a Brazilian tourist and the evacuation of a severely injured Swiss national.
Lombok authorities have suspended access to the routes and are reviewing safety and evacuation standards. When climbing becomes available again, we recommend booking your trek with experienced guides on MyBaliTrips.com.
The Regent of East Lombok, Haerul Warisin, emphasizes that the innovation is solely aimed at safety. In Sembalun, tourists will undergo mandatory briefing, medical examination, and equipment check, while local guides and porters will receive additional training in handling extreme situations. 'We do not pursue personal interests; this is done to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone heading to Rinjani,' he noted.
Rinjani is a serious mountaineering route with sharp weather changes, requiring good physical fitness, reliable equipment, and the accompaniment of a licensed guide. Make sure to have insurance that covers active recreation and contact trusted agencies in Bali: they operate legally, collaborate with certified guides, and remain in contact in case of unforeseen situations.
