Bali, Indonesia – An Australian woman, identified
as 45-year-old Vanessa Louise Crimmins from Paddington, Sydney, has been
detained by Bali police after allegedly stealing two laptops from Popular Deli
on Jalan Subak Sari in North Kuta. The incident, which took place on the
morning of October 30, 2024, was captured on the deli’s CCTV cameras and has
since circulated widely in both Indonesian and Australian media.
Crimmins, reportedly a teacher in
Australia, was seen on camera leaving the premises carrying two computer bags.
According to police, the bags contained an HP laptop, valued at approximately
IDR 4 million, and a MacBook Air worth IDR 10 million. The laptops belonged to
24-year-old university student Ni Nyoman Ari Purwaningsih and 42-year-old Ardi
Nurcahyadi, both of whom reported their computers missing after leaving them
unattended in the lounge area of the deli.
Badung Police spokesperson Putu
Sukarma stated that after receiving complaints from the two Indonesian victims,
officers reviewed the surveillance footage, which showed Crimmins taking the
laptops. Authorities acted quickly, apprehending Crimmins while she was still
on the deli premises and recovering both laptops in her possession.
The footage, which shows Crimmins
walking out with the computer bags, has sparked public interest and debate on
social media, drawing attention to the legal consequences she may face. Under
Section 362 of the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP), if the victims and police
proceed with formal charges, and Crimmins, if found guilty, could face a prison
sentence of up to five years.
