From 13 May, Tabanan Regency will begin enforcing penalties for littering and for breaching waste-sorting rules. Inspections will apply not only to residents but also to businesses—hotels, restaurants, cafés and other establishments.

At first, offenders may receive a verbal warning. If that does not work, they will be issued a written notice. If violations continue, the case may be taken to court as a minor offence. The municipal public order service will monitor compliance.
For businesses, the consequences could be more serious. If a hotel, restaurant or café fails to follow waste-management rules, it may affect their permits. According to the Tabanan authorities, special attention will be paid to the hotel, restaurant and café sector because it generates large volumes of waste in the Tabanan and Kediri areas.
This is part of a broader waste reform in the regency. Organic waste is recommended to be processed on site, recyclables sent to waste banks or for recycling, and from 1 May only residual waste should go to the Mandung landfill.
A separate ban applies to litter on roads, pavements, and near rivers and irrigation canals. The authorities also want to make more active use of rules at the traditional village level.
