The Indonesian Environment Minister, Hanif Faisol Nurofik, has given tourist property owners, especially hotels, three months to establish waste management systems. Previously, a decree was issued requiring hotels and restaurants to handle their own waste processing and disposal to avoid overloading the island's landfills.

According to the minister, star-rated hotels will be inspected first, as they have the highest turnover and produce the most waste. An assessment has already been conducted in Denpasar and Badung, after which meetings with businesses are planned. Restaurants of a similar level will follow. All establishments are required to improve waste management before receiving special labeling.
The minister emphasized that he would not hesitate to impose sanctions on violators, as Bali's waste situation is critical. He noted that the requirements are simple and achievable. Many hotels, in an effort to adapt to the new rules, are currently paying external companies for waste disposal, often leading to unauthorized waste dumping.
Bali is too important for us. Every mistake leads to the gradual destruction of the island," he said, adding that the measures should also take local wisdom into account.
Although inspections have so far only taken place in Denpasar and Badung, the new policy will apply island-wide. According to the official website of the Bali provincial government, by 2026, it is planned that 50% of star-rated hotels will receive eco-friendly business operation certificates, including waste management systems.
