Tourist Overstay Found After Gili T Prayer Dispute

On Gili Trawangan (North Lombok Regency), a video of a dispute in a local prayer room (musalla) has been circulating online.

A New Zealand national, Miranda Lee Pearson, said the loudspeaker disturbed her during the nightly tadarus (Quran recitation) in Ramadan and demanded that the noise be stopped.
She damaged the microphone and also took the phone of the person who was filming what was happening. When locals came to retrieve the device, the woman threatened them with a bladed weapon (a parang).
After the clip went viral, immigration officers went to the scene. The check found that the foreign national had overstayed, and she was taken to the immigration office in Lombok.
Later, the East Lombok immigration office reported that she had been deported. Miranda Lee Pearson entered Indonesia on 8 December 2025 on a visa on arrival, which expired on 6 January 2026. On 25 February 2026, she was deported and placed on an entry ban list.
The North Lombok authorities also announced restrictions on the use of external loudspeakers at mosques and prayer rooms during Ramadan: until 23:00 Central Indonesia Time, and after that only indoor speakers.
Indonesia’s immigration service reminds travellers that for an overstay of less than 60 days, a fine of 1,000,000 rupiah per day is usually imposed, while an overstay of more than 60 days results in deportation and an entry ban.
For help with extending your visas, you can contact the Legal Indonesia agency. They will make sure to remind you when your visa expiry date is approaching to help you avoid an overstay.
