The inspection was carried out by Indonesia’s Directorate General of Corrections, the agency responsible for prisons and pre-trial detention centres. Officers inspected the residential blocks and inmates.
Hudi Ismono and several prison staff are currently under review. The agency has not yet disclosed the exact number of items found, the types of drugs, their weight, or the possible involvement of staff. If staff involvement is confirmed, they could face criminal charges.
Bali Police’s narcotics unit has joined the investigation. The Directorate General of Corrections is also coordinating with the National Narcotics Agency.
Kerobokan Prison has long been considered one of the most overcrowded on the island. As of March 2026, it held 1,730 people despite an official capacity of 1,480. The authorities are discussing relocating the facility from Badung to Jembrana, partly due to overcrowding and because the prison is located in a densely visited tourist area in southern Bali.
