The Bali Silent Disco Run story has taken another turn. Hendarsam Marantoko, head of Indonesia’s immigration service, said that foreigners are not permitted to organize events independently in the country.
The clarification followed the controversy surrounding the running club Entourage Bali. Screenshots of messages appeared on social media suggesting that Indonesians were denied the chance to take part in the runs after being asked about their citizenship. Club representatives apologized, described the incident as a registration error, and suspended their events.
Immigration authorities then launched an investigation into two Dutch nationals linked to the organization of the Bali Silent Disco Run. One held a work-related residence permit, while the other held an investor residence permit. Both left Indonesia before the investigation was completed and were banned from re-entering the country. The authorities are now investigating the company that sponsored their visas.
According to Hendarsam Marantoko, foreigners may take part in events as invited artists, performers, or technical specialists as part of an international team, provided that the activity is covered by their residence permit. However, they may not organize events independently.
