Foreigner Takes the Leap: Paragliding Down Mount Agung!

A video has surfaced online showing a man, reportedly a foreigner, paragliding down from Mount Agung. The incident occurred on December 6. The sacred mountain of Bali had only recently reopened for climbing after being closed from October 1 to November 30 due to ceremonial activities.
A witness, Ketut Urip, who lives near Mount Agung, claimed to have seen the paraglider flying overhead before landing in a field right in front of the Selat community health center.
The paraglider caused concern among the caretakers of the Pura Pasar Agung Temple, which is located on the slope of the volcano. The temple recently held a Karya Agung, a grand purification ceremony requiring meticulous preparation and complex rituals to maintain harmony between humans, nature, and the gods.
The incident was seen as disrespectful to the sanctity of this holy site. However, the caretakers stated that they lack the authority to intervene in such matters. Moreover, they suspect the tourist climbed Mount Agung without the services of a local guide. This is likely true, as it is improbable that a guide would allow a tourist to paraglide from the mountain’s summit. Based on the video, the paraglider probably launched from the southern slope of Mount Agung.
If authorities manage to identify the tourist, they may face penalties or even deportation. In cases like this, it’s best to follow the rule: “What is not explicitly allowed is forbidden,” as Balinese people hold their sacred sites in very high regard.
Additionally, when climbing the volcano, it is advisable to use the services of local guides, as required by the rules. Guides not only ensure you stay on the right path but also spare rescue teams from having to search for lost hikers in the surrounding forests and ravines. Despite appearing straightforward, the volcanic terrain and unpredictable weather can make trails difficult to navigate. Climbing with an experienced guide will undoubtedly provide peace of mind.
