BAD WRITERS: Who Gets to Say What's 'Bad Writing'?
“This Session Is Open To Men and Women”
Is 'bad writing' just a convenient label, a scapegoat for convention—or something we can pinpoint, analyze, and even use to sharpen our craft?
In this session, we’ll push past the usual clichés about what makes “good” vs. “bad” writing, diving deep into what makes for poor writing and why it even matters. Prepare to challenge accepted norms, analyze your own criteria with a ruthless eye, and redefine what bad writing might mean for you.
What We'll Be Doing:
- Calling It Out: We’ll share examples of authors and sections we personally find “bad”—let’s see where our judgments align or clash.
- Finding Patterns: Are there consistent themes or techniques in 'bad writing'? Let’s explore whether there’s something deeper, a thread of 'common mistakes' in the pieces we dissect.
- Reading Out Loud: We’ll dive into excerpts of 'bad writing' to unpack it word by word, drawing out both what falls flat and what we can take away to become stronger writers.
- Provocative Insights: Through NLP-inspired generalization exercises, we’ll analyze how perceptions and context alter what we consider “bad” and question whether ANYTHING should be off-limits in writing.
