Earlier this year, we were awed and dazzled by the soul-stirring photographs in the movie Samsara, but came away wondering and wanting to know about the man behind the camera.
This Monday in Salt of the Earth, we will not only marvel at the powerful, evocative mind-blowing photographs, but we will also get to know the man who paints with light and shadow, one of the greatest photojournalists of our time, Sebastian Salgado, and learn the stories behind the photographs, their impact on the photographer, and the stories of the people captured in these images.
I am excited about this movie as it is one of the best documentaries I have seen in years! The movie will be an intimate conversation at a private meeting at La Luz, where we will examine the photographs with the man behind the camera and live the stories told by one of the greatest artists ever.
The film is Salgado's 40-year journey through South America, Africa, Europe, the Arctic and his native Brazil, capturing natural landscapes both pristine and decaying. We will cross our planet, visit people and go among the many places of Ethiopia and Ecuador, Congo and Kuwait, Mozambique and Afghanistan to see our true humanity and all its conditions exposed and evoked. We are introduced to Sebastian's ambitious Genesis project, which took him to some of the most remote and untouched places on Earth. Scenes from this project capture breathtaking landscapes, wildlife and indigenous communities.
And what I really like about this movie is this.
📽️ In the film, directed by his son, we get to know him intimately, meet his incredible family, and see the mind-blowing photographs on a LARGE screen! They are beautiful, stunning, sometimes otherworldly! They are full of human emotion and we get to hear deeply candid and enlightening stories told by an artist who paints with light and shadow.
Salgado was about 70 years old at the time of filming and his stories are filled with wisdom, reflection and philosophy. The movie is a profound exploration of inspiration and passion despite the hardships and hopelessness he faces, and serves as a guide on how to live life to the fullest!
🏆 Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, the film has won 14 awards worldwide, including three Cannes Film Festival awards!
Just as this movie ignited something in me, this movie is my wish for all of you to ignite that "something" in you as well.
