In 1960s Hong Kong, Mr. Chow and Mrs. Chan live next door to each other in an apartment building. They later learn that their spouses are having an affair with each other. In their solitude, Chow and Chan form a close bond. They often play out how their affair began. As the couple spends more and more time together, they struggle with their growing attraction, propriety, and morality while their spouses' affair continues.
