Batuan-style painting represents a unique facet of ancient Balinese art, tracing back to ancient times when it was crafted as offerings (known as Batuan paintings) to the Supreme God. Originating from the village of Batuan Gianyar in the 18th century, as evidenced by the Baturan inscription during the reign of King Dharmawangsa Wardhana Marakata Pankaya Sthanottunggadewa (944-997 Cak or 1022-1026 AD), these paintings gained international recognition in the 1930s.
Characterized by their predominantly black and white hues and complete coverage of the canvas with intricate artwork, Batuan Gianyar paintings are renowned for their distinctiveness. Crafting a Batuan painting typically requires 3-6 months for a single piece. Today, the Batuan Village stands at over 1001 years old.
