Experience a one-of-a-kind exhibition featuring the works of two renowned Bali-based artists, Ade Itameda and Eka Mardiys, at Masa Masa from November 9 to 17, 2024. Titled Alir Alur: A Sekala 369 Art and Tattoo Showcase, this event unites various disciplines, inspirations, and mediums, allowing traditional batik patterns and contemporary tattoo artistry to coexist harmoniously.
Ade and Eka, celebrated tattoo artists operating from their studio Sekala 369, have established a distinctive visual style that reflects Balinese and Indonesian iconography, seamlessly integrating these influences into both tattoo art and contemporary works.
In collaboration with the Bali-based fashion and batik brand Pithecanthropus, the artists will display a diverse collection of drawings, paintings, prints, and photographs at Masa Masa—a gallery, restaurant, and concept store in Gianyar. They were challenged to reinterpret Pithecanthropus’s batik designs into new artistic forms, creating artworks and tattoo designs inspired by these visuals.
Additionally, the exhibition will showcase Bali Project Volume 01, a collaboration between Ade Itameda and photographer Ifan Ardiansyah. This project features a series of tattoo photographs influenced by Balinese pepatraan (organic floral patterns) and keketusan (repeating floral patterns).
The title Alir Alur translates to "Flowing Channels" in Indonesian, symbolizing the various styles of Indonesian fabric patterns and ornaments that inspire Sekala 369, particularly from Bali, Java, and Peranakan cultures. It also reflects the diverse tattoo styles that influence the artists, including Old School, American Traditional, and Japanese styles. This theme of "flowing between channels" emphasizes the different mediums the artists work with, such as human skin, Kamasan canvas, and paper.
The exhibition will kick off with an artist talk featuring Ade Itameda and Eka Mardiys on Saturday, November 9, 2024, followed by a DJ performance by Irama Utara.
During the exhibition's final weekend (November 15-17), special flash tattoo sessions will be offered from 1 PM to 7 PM, featuring designs inspired by the Pithecanthropus batik collection.
The exhibition is open daily from 10 AM to 9 PM and is free to enter. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant world of art and tattoo culture!
