The couple, HL, 32, and her husband ZY, 31, were taking photos at dawn. The location where they were taking pictures is quite popular. Picturesque black trees grow on the edge of the volcano crater. They are located right on the edge of a high cliff in the crater. According to an eyewitness, the couple's guide, ZY, the victim's husband, first took a photo on a dangerous ledge, then his wife approached the edge of the crater. Trying to get the most dramatic photo, she took a few steps back, closer to the edge of the abyss, but got entangled in the hem of her long dress, stumbled, and fell down into the volcanic lake.
After the incident, the guide immediately sought help from rescuers, who set out to search for the victim. The descent to the place where the tourist fell was very steep. The search operation lasted several hours. During this time, the attraction was closed to tourists. Unfortunately, HL did not survive, which is not surprising – the height of the crater at the point of the fall is 75 meters.
At 11:38 local time, the victim's body was transported by ambulance to the Blambangan Regional Hospital, Banuwangi, accompanied by police. It is supposed to be flown to Bali by plane.
Remember that being on the edge of a cliff is dangerous in any circumstances, especially if it's a volcano. Many of them, such as Mount Semeru, Bromo, and Mount Ijen itself, remain active. This means that small earthquakes occur on them constantly, and unpredictable eruptions of hot ash and gas are also possible.
