Discover the Balinese Spirit: Explore the “Womb Caves” of Ubud with Putu Mahagiri

In this extraordinary experience you will plunge into the magnificent culture of the Balinese people, accompanied each step of the way by our own Cultural Liaison, Putu Mahagiri.

Your day will begin with a one-hour session on “Cultural Etiquette”, learning about the ritualistic customs of Bali, and how to respectfully observe their code of conduct. In this session we will discuss proper attire, manners, traditional offerings, and prayers and their deeper meanings.

Once you are briefed on the local conventions, you will sit for a delicious vegan lunch in our Indo-Vedic restaurant, Dapur Usada. Our head chef Ngurah has created his own spin on the traditional beloved “Nasi Campur” dish of Bali, and you will delight in the amazing flavours and tastes of vegan “sate”, indigenous vegetables and Indonesia’s famous “yellow rice.”

After lunch you will depart for a truly remarkable experience at one of Bali’s most ancient temples Pura Pengukur Ukuran, located on the archaeological site of Goa Garba. Pengukur Ukuran means measurements, and it is believed that Goa Garba is a sacred place to learn spiritual and magical knowledge, pre-dating Hinduism. Created in circa 1116BC, Goa means cave and Garba means womb, and the three rock niches on site are spaces used over the years for deep meditation, and feel like being housed inside mother earths’ womb.

At the temple upstairs you will sit and do guided prayers in the Balinese style. Once you have walked the site and received deeper information about it, you will have a special opportunity to meditate.

Finally a question and answer session with the resident temple priest provides further fascinating insights into this unique heritage site, an extraordinary roundup to a deeply touching day.
